The slushie was allegedly created in about the year 1800 in a bar known as Venus in Santiago, Chile, around twenty three miles on the eastern side of the Tiano iron mine, by a collection of American mining technical engineers. Tales persist that Jennings Cox invented the drink when he completely ran out of gin whilst entertaining American visitors.

Originally the slushee was dished up in a tall glass loaded with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the liquid of 1 or 2 limes was squeezed on the sugar. Two or three oz . of rum finalized the concoction. The glass was next frosted by mixing with a long handled spoon.

Later on the Slushie evolved to be mixed in a shaker with identical ingredients but with shaved ice instead. After a thorough shaking, it was put into a chilled flute glass.

Consumption of the slushy drink remained localised until 1909, when Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy health officer, tried out Cox’s drink. Johnson subsequently launched it into the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.

The slushy has become progressively popular and the slushie spread across North & South America rapidly, until Prohibition in the United states of america (1920-1933) slowed the momentum significantly. Having said that, once alcohol was made lawful again in the US, the concept of the slushee spread swiftly across north America, and the craze passed on around the world.
